Stop Motion Animation is an animation technique to make a physically manipulated object appear to move on its own. The object is moved by small amounts between individually photographed frames, creating the illusion of movement when the series of frames are played as a continuous sequence. Clay figures are often used in stop motion animations, known asclaymation, for their ease of repositioning. (video examples available)
The magic of stop-motion animation has enthralled audiences for over a century, but with the advent of CGI, many thought it was at risk of extinction. Yet despite these fears, animators all over the world continue to manually create unique stories out of physical materials, be it clay, sand or paint, puppets or people. The amount of time and meticulous effort these animators commit makes stop motion uniquely impressive and refreshingly organic in a digital age, and have driven the art form's resurgence in film, commercials, and even on Vine!
The purpose of this website is to provide a resource for teachers who want to engage students in the exciting experience of learning how to make pictures move. Animation is one of the most creative areas of filmmaking today, offering great opportunities for personal expression on both small and large scale. Providing the next generation with the skills to produce animation will not only prepare them to participate in this growing medium but also push the medium in new directions.
